LLM visibility explained
What LLM visibility means, how it differs from SEO, and why it matters
LLM visibility explained
LLM visibility is how often and accurately large language models cite your content when answering questions. It's not SEO — it's a different game with different rules.
Definitions
Before diving in, let's define terms:
GEO — Generative Engine Optimization. Optimizing content so AI systems (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude) cite and surface it. The new frontier of visibility.
AEO — Answer Engine Optimization. Structuring content for featured snippets, knowledge panels, and direct answers. A subset of visibility work focused on structured answers.
LLM visibility — How often and accurately large language models reference your content when answering questions. What Boki's LLM visibility agent (beta) measures.
SEO — Search Engine Optimization. Optimizing for traditional search engine ranking (Google, Bing). Still important, but no longer the only game.
How it differs from SEO
| Aspect | Traditional SEO | LLM Visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in search results | Be cited in AI responses |
| Measurement | Position 1-10 on SERP | Whether AI cites you |
| Competition | Other pages for keywords | Being the authoritative source |
| Signals | Links, keywords, technical factors | Comprehensiveness, accuracy, structure |
Why it matters
Traffic is shifting. Users increasingly ask AI assistants instead of searching. If your content isn't cited in AI responses, you don't exist for those users.
Attribution is different. When an LLM cites your content, it often includes your brand. That's visibility even without a click.
Authority compounds. Content that AI cites tends to get cited more. Early optimization creates lasting advantage.
What makes content LLM-visible?
Research suggests LLMs prefer content that:
Directly answers questions
Content that clearly and directly answers a specific question is more likely to be cited than content that circles around a topic.
Is comprehensive
LLMs often cite sources that cover a topic thoroughly. Thin content gets passed over for more complete sources.
Has clear structure
Headings, lists, tables, and clear organization help LLMs extract and cite specific information.
Includes authoritative signals
Citations, expert quotes, data sources, and clear methodology signal reliability.
Offers unique value
Content that says something others don't — unique data, original research, expert perspective — is more likely to be cited as a primary source.
What Boki's LLM visibility agent does
The LLM visibility agent (beta) scores your content against a specific question:
- You select content (minimum 50 words)
- You enter a question
- The agent analyzes how well your content would answer that question
- You get a score (0-100) and specific feedback
The score predicts citation likelihood. Higher scores mean the content is more likely to be cited when an LLM answers that question.
Limitations
It's predictive, not definitive. Different LLMs weight factors differently. The score indicates likelihood, not certainty.
Questions matter. The same content scores differently against different questions. Test the questions your audience actually asks.
It's not SEO rank. A high LLM visibility score doesn't mean you'll rank #1 on Google. Different systems, different criteria.
Strategy implications
Focus on questions, not keywords
Think about what questions your audience asks AI, not just what keywords they search.
Be the definitive source
Comprehensive, accurate, well-structured content wins. Being the authoritative answer matters more than keyword density.
Structure for extraction
Make it easy for AI to cite you. Clear headings. Specific claims. Data in tables.
Human writing still matters
AI can detect AI-generated content. Human expertise, perspective, and voice create the differentiation that makes content worth citing.
